Maggie’s Story

A Second Chance

Everyone says their dog is the best dog ever. Maggie was no exception.

She had a personality all her own. She was best known for barking at everything and everyone who passed by the house. Delivery truck? Bark. Neighbor walking their dog? Bark. A leaf blowing across the yard? Definitely bark. She took her neighborhood watch duties very seriously. But beneath that loud exterior was a gentle giant with a deeply loving soul.

Where Her Story Began

Maggie came into our lives in June of 2007. She had been found on a hot early summer day in a cardboard box with two of her littermates. A construction worker discovered them and was able to find homes for two of the puppies, but one remained. Unable to keep her due to long workdays out of town, he brought her to the local police department. A dispatcher briefly took her in, but after a few days realized it wasn’t the right fit.

That is how Maggie found her way to Andrew and Sara. She was just five weeks old and weighed only six pounds — small enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

One of a Kind

At first, Maggie was presumed to be a Rottweiler mix because of her black-and-tan coloring and stocky build. But as she grew longer rather than taller, curiosity led to a DNA test — still emerging technology in 2007. The results confirmed she was a true Heinz 57, with Basset Hound being the only breed with a notable percentage.

As she matured, the Basset traits became unmistakable: her long body, short legs that turned slightly outward, floppy ears, and soulful hound eyes. She kept her Rottweiler coloring but carried the unmistakable charm of a Basset. She was truly one of a kind.

A Life Well Loved

Maggie was spoiled in the best possible way. She had a dozen dog beds, toys galore, daily walks, high-quality food, countless treats, and the occasional special human-food indulgence. About a year later she gained a rescue Beagle brother named Buddy, and several years after that, a Corgi mix sister named Oreo. Maggie thrived as the matriarch, living her very best life.

Her Legacy

Maggie was left to die in a cardboard box by someone who chose irresponsibility over compassion. Because someone stopped. Because someone cared. Because she was given a second chance — Maggie lived a full, joyful, deeply loved life.

She left an imprint on our hearts that could never fade. That imprint became Maggie’s Fund.

What began as a Donor Advised Fund evolved into Maggie’s Fund, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to provide greater flexibility and impact in supporting animal rescue efforts. Maggie was given a second chance. Through Maggie’s Fund, her legacy ensures that countless other dogs are given that same opportunity — a chance to be safe, loved, and live the lives they deserve.

Her story began in a cardboard box. Her legacy continues in every life we help save.
